Today we’re rolling out auto-hiring — a new feature that automatically screens job applicants against your filters and hires qualified freelancers on the spot.

It’s a step toward our vision for high-scale microtasking on Work: handling hundreds or thousands of hires autonomously, without manual overhead and delays.

Hiring on traditional freelance platforms

On most platforms, hiring means opening a queue and reviewing every single applicant. It’s a meticulous, manual process that demands attention to each profile, message, and credential. It also introduces all sorts of issues related to communication, including delays and all sorts of misunderstandings.

That doesn’t scale. Even hiring a few dozen people becomes a slog, and for microtasking, you often need hundreds. Not only do such manual efforts fail to scale, but they can also often be optimized. Screening a person involves repeating the same actions again and again with each freelancer.

Hiring on Work at scale

With auto-hiring Work deprecates this model and gives a powerful tool in the hands of those who need a large number of real humans to execute on their tasks. This is how it works, step by step:

  1. Create a job. Just like you normally do.
  2. Set your filters. Choose by country, freelancer rating, category of services, and more.
  3. Set the limit. Define how many freelancers you are willing to hire.
  4. Top up the amount. This is the amount which goes to escrow. You can always top-up more or request a refund.
  5. Personalize onboarding. Add an intro message that every new hire receives the moment they join your job.
Auto-hiring workflow

Once you finish defining auto-hiring criteria and publish the job, Work will start auto-hiring every applicant who matches your criteria. Auto-hiring will automatically pause when it hits the budget limit, or runs out of money.

It’s important to note that freelancers hired by auto-hire are treated as regular hires. So that you still can message them, or request an update, or even cancel a hire.

Auto-hiring as a part of fully automated flow

Auto-hiring is one milestone on a much longer path of fully automated task management on Work. We envision the fully automated flow to be a really powerful instrument for those who need tens, hundreds, and thousands of real humans to execute on their business requests.

Full automation allows you to focus on planning your tasks by providing a clear description, defining screening conditions, and setting up acceptance criteria for deliverables. Work takes care of the rest. It hires qualified freelancers and evaluates their results using AI to ensure they meet your standards, automatically closing the loop so you can scale operations without increasing headcount.

What’s next

Our next milestone is custom screening process. You’ll be able to define screening questions specific to your task and have responses evaluated automatically with AI before hire. This adds a layer of task-specific validation on top of your filters — perfect for jobs where a quick reasoning check or domain prompt separates the best candidates.

Ready to try Auto-hiring? Create a job in Work, set your filters and budget, add an intro message, and hit Start. We’ll handle the rest — at scale.
